Nicht fertiggestellte Blöcke 5 und 6 des ChNPP

Block 5 hätte im Herbst 1986 den Probebetrieb aufnehmen sollen, Block 6 war 1986 zur Hälfte fertiggestellt. Trotz des Super-GAUs in Block 4 wurde zunächst an beiden Blöcken weitergebaut. Durch die hohe radioaktive Belastung des Gebiets mussten die Bauarbeiten am 1. Januar 1988 eingestellt werden. Beide Blöcke wurden mit einem Schutzanstrich vor Witterung und Alterung geschützt. Die UdSSR plante, die beiden Blöcke nach Absinken der Radioaktivität fertigzustellen. Die neue politische Lage in den 1990er Jahren machte die Durchführung dieses Plans unmöglich, da die Ukraine als Nachfolgestaat auf diesem Gebiet weder den politischen Willen noch die finanziellen Mittel zur Fertigstellung hatte.
